A few weeks ago, Gal Gadot said that she was going to be working with James Gunn on a third Wonder Woman movie. Today, an article in Variety Magazine refutes that claim, and says no such collaboration has been confirmed. I don’t know who to believe at this point, but I am hoping Gal Gadot is correct and Wonder Woman 3, with Gadot as Wonder Woman, is still happening. I also think Patti Jenkins should be given the job as the director of this third movie.
I realize that James Gunn was brought in to clean up the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) and that he may or may not be making some big changes. While it looks like Jason Mamoa will still be playing Aquaman for a while, I personally do not want to see reboots of the other big franchises, like Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman. I think in a big cinematic universe like this, continuity is important. Wonder Woman 3 would go a long way towards keeping this continuity going. I think James Gunn is a great world-builder, but for him to work on the DCEU, I think it would be best to wrap up the stories that have already begun. We need a big finale like Endgame was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and then it would make more sense for Gunn to put his own stamp on the DCEU. Wonder Woman 3 could be that big finale. Gadot is a very popular Wonder Woman and recasting the part is unnecessary. She had cameos in both Shazam and the Flash movies, and they were big highlights in both. I think she deserves a chance to wrap things up before James Gunn really takes over. Another way to keep continuity going would be to keep Patti Jenkins on board as director. I realize the reception for Wonder Woman 1984 was mixed, but the first Wonder Woman movie was wildly popular, and I think Jenkins can make this third movie as good as the first one.
The DCEU is a mess right now. Black Adam, the Shazam sequel and the Flash movie saw limited success and Blue Beetle looks like it may flop at the box office over the next few weeks. I enjoyed all of these movies (and I expect Blue Beetle will actually be pretty good too) but I know that the DCEU needs new life. James Gunn has done some great things with Guardians of the Galaxy and he might be able to clean up the DCEU too. But I do think Wonder Woman could help bridge that transition. A third movie that wraps everything up and allows Gunn to start with a clean slate is the way to go, in my opinion. Here’s hoping that happens.
See you at the movies.
