Recently, Rachel Zegler, who is going to be playing Snow White in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic, has gotten some backlash from some fans that I think is false and unfair. Last year, she said in an interview that "It's no longer 1937. We absolutely wrote a Snow White that is not gonna be saved by the prince. And she's not going to be dreaming about true love. She's dreaming about becoming the leader she knows she can be." This quote, along with a recent comment defending striking writers and actors, has turned a section of fans against Zegler. These critics are accusing her of “pseudofeminism” and minimizing the idea of dreaming about true love.
I disagree with these critics. This new movie is not necessarily discouraging the idea of True Love, and it is not necessarily a bad thing that Snow White isn’t sitting around waiting for love to fall in her lap. Someone can find True Love even if they aren’t looking for it. Modern Disney remakes do not keep the princesses from falling in love with their princes, they just have more depth to their characters now. That is not a bad thing, and I don’t have a problem with Rachel Zegler recognizing this. Besides, she is just the actress. She didn’t write the story and she’s not the director. Explaining what her character is going to be like does not mean she is necessarily making a statement about anything. She might just be telling us what her character is like.
I also don’t have a problem with her defense of striking Hollywood actors and writers. She said that she should be paid for every hour that her characters are streamed online. I don’t know why this is a controversial statement. Plenty of actors and actresses demand percentages of box office returns. In this modern era of streaming, why wouldn’t actors demand a percentage of all streaming returns? This seems like common sense to me.
In the end, I think the Rachel Zegler news is a whole lot of nothing. She isn’t saying anything that out of the ordinary. I do think that Disney live-action remakes tend to make certain fans upset, and any statement made that could possibly be interpreted as ‘woke’ or ’anti-male’ is going to get picked apart and heavily criticized. In Zegler’s case, I think the attacks on her have been way too harsh and unfair and, in some cases, inappropriate.
That’s all for now, and see you at the movies.
